Stage 6 • Birthdays
Capture the Celebration

Cake smashes, laughter, messy moments. These are the memories that stick. Do not worry about perfection. Capture what feels real and let the day speak for itself.
Assign Someone to Just Take Photos
If you want real photos from the party, designate one person whose only job is to capture the day. Not a guest who also happens to have a phone. Someone who is actively watching for moments, moving around the room, and focused on the camera rather than the conversation. The best birthday photos come from someone who is not trying to do two things at once.
Let the Cake Smash Be Messy
The cake smash works because it is unscripted. Put the cake in front of them, step back, and let it happen. Do not direct it. Do not clean it up mid-smash. The frosting on the nose, the confused first touch, the moment they decide to go all in. Those are the shots. Get out of the way and let your baby surprise you.
Capture the Reactions, Not Just the Baby
The faces of the people watching are part of the story. Grandparents laughing, siblings hovering, parents trying to hold it together. These are the photos that will mean the most in ten years. Make sure whoever is shooting is looking at the room, not just the high chair.
Take a Few Quiet Ones Before It Starts
Before the guests arrive and before the cake comes out, take a few calm photos. Just your baby in their birthday outfit, clean and rested. These quieter images often end up being the ones you frame. The chaos is fun to look back on, but the still ones are what you display.
